Skirt by Christopher Kane

Styled with sweater by Acne; shoes by Steven

Same and similar sparkle skirts:

I am a fan of mixing up the pieces in my wardrobe in new ways.  It keeps things fresh and helps my pocketbook significantly.  I love this metallic skirt and wore it many time during the holidays.  Metallic skirts and lurex in general are still, and even more so now, very in fashion and I want to make sure I get as much mileage as I can from this piece.

The last time I featured this skirt it was the holiday season.  The way wearing sparkles worked a couple of months ago needs to be altered for the season.  It’s the end of winter (hopefully) and about to be spring.  With the snow, rain, sleet or whatever else is falling from the sky I want to be cozy, but still stylish.   Wearing a casual oversized sweater with this fancy skirt is a great way to embrace the transition season, staying warm, and looking stylish.

Casual sweaters and even sweatshirts are a great way to downplay a fancy skirt like the one I featured today.

The look I am featuring is a look that can go from day to night.  You can definitely wear this outfit to the office, but it’s also great for dinner or a reception at night. …Or when performing live on stage at Songbyrd in Adams Morgan!

About Songbyrd:

I discovered Songbyrd shortly after they opened their doors thanks to two of my dear friends, Lauren and DJKC.  I have since attended a great party hosted by DJKC in the new basement music venue at Songbyrd.  Definitely one of the more fun nights out I have had in DC due to the quality of music and atmosphere.

When I showed up this past Saturday to shoot for Politiquette, I was blown away by the brunch session infused with legit soul recordings. Many of them DC originals.  I learned that DC’s Kevin Coombe of DC Soul Recordings also spins regularly at this venue.  If I wasn’t sold already, that sealed the deal.  The people, food, beverages, decor and most importantly music are all exceptional at Songbyrd.  If you haven’t checked out this venue, a visit should be at the top of your list.

Lookout for two more posts this week that will feature the Songbyrd dining area and the listening cafe.

Special thanks to Joe and Alisha for their hospitality!

Leather pants by Michael by Michael Kors

Michael Kors is an established global fashion empire.  With multiple lines, some more reasonably priced than others, most people have encountered Michael Kors in some capacity.  His carry-all tote bags and oversize wrist watches became “it pieces” to the point of saturating the market.  I even recall Anne Romney during the last presidential campaign being totally into her Michael Kors watch and talking about it during interviews.  This is a woman who can afford any watch she desires!  While those are probably the most recognizable items from the Michael by Michael Kors brand, there are many items in his lower priced collection, including these leather pants, that are worth checking out.

For many years I thought about purchasing a pair of leather pants.  I finally found this pair on sale recently and decided I would give them a try.  I am very happy I purchased these pants because they are a great wardrobe staple.  Any wardrobe can benefit by adding a pair of leather or faux leather pants and here are some reasons why:

-When I received these pants, I couldn’t stop thinking of ways to wear them.  I knew that by having this one pair of pants in my closet I had multiple new outfit options.

-Also, it is freezing outside right now and I am uninspired to dress up.  I can put these pants on with anything, including an oversize cozy sweater like the look I am featuring today, and be warm, comfortable and stylish.

-Lastly they increase your cool-factor.  I was recently styling someone and the point was to come across fresh, hip and cool.  One of the easiest ways to do this, is by wearing leather pants.

Similar leather pants:

Gone are the days when leather pants were only for rebels and rock stars.  Mainstream women are all now wearing leather pants.  From corporate executives to ladies of the Junior League, leather pants are everywhere and I am a big advocate that leather pants can be worn most anywhere.  Washingtonians, listen up, you can even wear leather pants for work.  My best advice is that you make certain the pants aren’t too tight or form fitting.  For example, I have curves so I would wear a longer shirt that covers my backside and a blazer for the office.  There can definitely be limitations, but there are always ways make leather pants appropriate.

ACNE stands for “Ambition to Create Novel Expressions.”  ACNE was founded in 1996 and was originally part of a creative collective that focused on film, production, graphic design, and advertising.  In 1997 ACNE got into the fashion business when one of their co-founders who is still the Creative Director of the brand today, Johnny Johansson, made raw denim jeans stitched in red and started giving them away to friends and family.  Fashion magazines discovered the jeans and ACNE began to evolve to be more than just a denim design.  In 2006, the fashion component of ACNE became a standalone company.

It’s FINALLY sweater weather in DC.  I haven’t felt like getting cozy in a sweater until this past weekend!  The weather is now appropriate for mid-November and it’s so nice to embrace the fall.

I discovered this ACNE sweater back in the summer when it was a million degrees outside.  I kept putting off buying it, but when I was in Los Angeles in September I took at visit to ACNE’s standalone store in downtown LA and decided I had to have it.  The sweater is so warm and beautiful.  I also love how the sweater shows a little skin with the potential to be worn off the shoulder, so it can be sexy.

Every fall I buy a new, luxurious sweater that is amazing and that I will get a lot of wear out of.  I feel like I end up living in this sort of “stylish blanket” when all I really want to do is be snuggled in a real blanket.  There are always so many beautiful sweaters during the fall/winter to choose from on any budget.   I do think its worth looking at the fibers that are being used to make sure it’s as soft on your skin as possible.  The last thing you want from a sweater is to itch the entire time it’s on your body.

You may wonder why I only buy one sweater, it’s because I live in DC and do not have room for multiple chunky sweaters in my closet.   I am sure you can relate!

I think this sweater is perfect for off-duty occasions.  Anything that does not involved a corporate boardroom, the White House, The Hill, or a startup incubator setting.  This is a great look for casual night events, dates, or brunch with friends.

Photo Information:  Photos were taken by Anna Meyer.  These photos were taken at Union Market DC.  This is definitely a venue I would wear this sweater to normally.  While I was at the market I checked out one of my favorite little beauty stands, Follain.  If you haven’t been to this shop, you should stop by.  One of my favorite things that they sell is Ilia cosmetics.
