Makeup Tips for 17th Street High Heel Race – 17th Street, NW, WDC – 10.19.2016

Every October in Washington, DC the spectacularly festive 17th Street High Heel Race featuring costumed drag queens is held as a benefit for charity.  The High Heel Race has been going on since 1986 and benefits the Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets, a 501 (c)(3).

Some of my friends have recently reached out to ask for makeup tips and/or if I could help them with makeup application.  This made me think it would be helpful to put together a guide of how to prep skin and what items are needed in a drag queen’s makeup kit – it’s not much different than my own daily kit.

I consulted Celadon Spa’s makeup artist, Melissa Hurley, to make sure the list that I provided was comprehensive.

Makeup Kit Must Haves

  1. Razor – you want to be clean shaven.
  2. Skin exfoliant – to remove skin buildup.  Make sure you test this product prior so you don’t break out or irritate your skin the day of!
  3. Face moisturizer
  4. Makeup primer to help your makeup last throughout the long evening.
  5. Foundation to match your skin tone – see more tips on this below.
  6. Concealer for spots, under eyes, etc.
  7. Lipstick or lipgloss to go with the identity of your costume.  For example, if you are dressing like Melania Trump a nude, plumping gloss would be appropriate, but for Gwen Stefani a bright red is the way to go.
  8. False eyelashes and eyelash glue, you want to be more dramatic than everyday and make a statement with your look.
  9. Contouring powder – very important for shaping the face.
  10. Blush, something that works with your skin tone and costume.
  11. Eyeshadow kit with multiple colors for options and a defined eye.
  12. Black mascara – don’t share this product I won’t go into the gory details.
  13. Eyeliner (for a cat eye get liquid eyeliner, for any other look a regular eyeliner in black or a color if it works for your costume) – another item to not share.
  14. Makeup brushes for contouring, brow shaping, eyeshadow, blush, powder.
  15. Tweezers because you never know.
  16. Q-tips for corrections.
  17. Makeup remover wipes for the end of the night.
  18. Bobby pins and rubber bands for any wig/hair needs if your wig is not already set.

More tips via Q&A with Melissa Hurley of Celadon Spa:

1) What are your thoughts on priming for makeup?  Exfoliation?  Special products or primer?

Yes, exfoliation is key to a smooth makeup application. Dermalogica makes a great daily exfoliator that will help you maintain a clear complexion, or for a more intense effect, Eminence pear & poppy seed microdermabrasion polisher is great to bring out your skin’s natural glow. For a primer, I would recommend Kevyn Aucoin’s primed skin developer, which is great for all skin types. It will help create an even base for your makeup, as well as give your makeup staying power.

2) How does someone go about matching their foundation to their skin tone?

I always match foundation directly on the face, close to the jawline. As a general rule, if you can’t decide between 2 shades, go with the lighter one, as the natural oils in your skin tend to darken your foundation as the day goes on.

3) What are makeup/product must haves?

A good concealer-Kevyn Aucoin’s sensual skin enhancer is a must have-it is a hybrid foundation/concealer, that can be used anywhere on the body (it can even cover tattoos). It is very concentrated, and can be built up to give you maximum coverage. It can also be used as a contour or highlight.

A good contouring powder, such as the Kevyn Aucoin medium sculpting powder, which will give you a natural shadow under the cheekbones, that mimics definition at the hollows of the cheeks. It’s a makeup artist staple product.

Good quality brushes to give you the most professional results (all of the Kevyn Aucoin ones are good), and or a beauty blender makeup sponge for an airbrushed look to your foundation.

4) Any eyelash application tips?

Measure the lashes up against your natural lash line to make sure the length is correct, trim if necessary, apply a thin strip of glue to the lash base, and let the glue dry for a few seconds before applying, so they don’t slide around on your skin. And don’t be afraid to ask for help with application. 😉

5) Anything else?!

My favorite simple trick to bring attention to your lips is to apply a little lip gloss in a shade lighter than your lipstick right to the center of your lips to give them more pop!

You can also book a professional makeup session for this event and purchase all of the products recommended by Melissa at Celadon Spa.

SilkPeel – Celadon Spa – 09.30.2016

This past week I had one of the most amazing spa treatments I have ever had at Celadon Spa.  The treatment is called a SilkPeel, a new service being offered by Celadon Spa.  The SilkPeel is a microdermabrasion to exfoliate the skin and cleanse the pores, together with a simultaneous infusion of specialized serum, chosen to meet the skin’s needs, which treats and volumizes the skin.  My skin has never looked so good.  In fact my skin was glowing, fuller and close to flawless after the treatment.

You may have heard of the ‘diamond facial’ that Hollywood stars do before special events like the Oscars or Grammys to get that ‘red carpet glow’ and this is the treatment!  After having it done I was so thrilled with the results I understand why you would want to have this done prior to a special event.  It’s currently gala season in DC and a facial like this is perfect to get done prior to a Washington gala.  A SilkPeel would be great before any number of upcoming special events like election or holiday parties, weddings or just to treat yourself to feeling and looking great!

The main reason this treatment is so popular is because it ‘plumps’  the skin volume by 70%’ so it produces a cherubic and healthy effect.  Additionally, it great for a lip plumping treatment and temporary eye lifting, a way to avoid anything invasive.

You can see above in the first few photos at the beginning of my treatment that my face and lips lacked fullness, but when you look at the second to the last photo taken immediately after the treatment there is a big difference in the glow and fullness of my skin.

The final photo is a low quality selfie from the day after.  I barely have any makeup on besides mascara and lipgloss and I am completely okay posting the way I look.  I would normally not go out with that little makeup on, so I was extremely pleased with the results!

I can’t say enough good things about the SilkPeel.  I  have been a client of Celadon Spa for over ten years and this past year it has been an honor to partner with them, especially to try out this new service and be able to share the experience and results with other people.  I highly recommend this treatment.  I will definitely be going back and doing this again!

Politiquette Tip: Taking care of your skin is one of the best investments you can make.

Every woman wants to feel and look her best for a special occasion. I recently attended many of festivities surrounding the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) Dinner and those were events that I wanted to attend looking and feeling my best.

I love having the opportunity to get dressed up and I know that going to a salon and letting talented professionals help me get my “glam” on is the best way to make the most of my look.

With my busy personal schedule and Saturdays being very busy days at salons, I planned my appointment for services at Celadon Spa well over a month in advance of the Saturday of my events. I decided to have my hair styled and my makeup applied professionally. Relying on someone who pretties people for a living is a great way to relieve a lot of stress on a special day.

Prior to the date of the actual service, I scheduled a consultation appointment at Celadon Spa. I was able to show the hair stylist and makeup artist my dress, accessories and photos of looks I liked and hoped to replicate. This was a great way to ensure my appointment on the day of the WHCA Dinner was a success.

I recommend a consultation in advance of very important events, especially a wedding. You want to know exactly what to expect when it comes to your appearance. The worst thing to happen is you don’t like how you look and you will not feel good or enjoy your special experience as you should.

On the day of the WHCA Dinner, I arrived at 1pm after getting two hours of sleep. I looked pretty rough, but thankfully there was an amazing glam team on site to work some magic. You can see my major transformation in the featured photos; I needed a lot of help that day to look presentable!

After a lot of love from Celadon Spa I ended up very happy and ready embrace my WHCA experience. I had an amazing evening and felt my best because I looked my best.

If you have a special occasion on the horizon I recommend visiting Celadon Spa.

Here are my getting ready for a special event tips broken down:

  • You know the date for a special event, call the salon immediately and make sure you can get on their schedule for services. You don’t want to risk your Style Guru’s schedule being booked.
  • Make a consultation appointment in advance of the special day. The salon will provide guidance as to how this works. This is definitely worth the investment.
  • Facials should be monthly for at least 6 months leading up to a special event. I have seen most of the estheticians at Celadon Spa for facials and every one of them has done amazing work for me. They are all educated to know the ins-and-outs of skincare for all skin types. I also love that they only use organic products for their services!  Timing for facials in advance of a special event is individual. I have sensitive skin and normally need to allow my skin to adjust for a few days after a facial. However, many celebrities have been known to have facials and microdermabrasion treatments the day of the Oscars so they are guaranteed to glow under their makeup!
  • Waxing services. I get my eyebrows waxed and shaped every 4 weeks at Celadon Spa. Similar to facials the timing of waxing services is unique to your own skin. I don’t get too red after waxing and have even attended an event at The White House with the President and First Lady where my photo was being taken immediately after this service!

  • Stay hydrated, get good exercise and sleep, and eat healthy the week leading up to a special event. All of these factors will play a role in how you look and how you feel on this occasion. Clearly I didn’t follow my own rules the night before the WHCA Dinner…
  • Try on clothes, make sure you have every accessory ready and keep everything you plan to wear in a safe, clean place until you need them. You don’t want to accidentally realize you need Spanx for your outfit or that your dog chewed a hole in your dress. I have had both of these things happen and the meltdown was real.
  • Be Zen! Before any big event I spend 5 minutes breathing deeply and setting my intention for the night. I want to make sure my head is clear so I can be fully present for every person and experience I encounter.

Today I am going to provide an invaluable tip for all of the busy ladies in DC – a professional salon blowout will save you time and money! I was fortunate enough to have an amazing boss when I began my career that taught me this tip and I want to make sure I pay it forward.  My favorite place for a blowout in DC is Celadon Spa conveniently located downtown.

Here is why a professional blowout saves you time and $:

  • During a blowout you can multi-task. Keep your laptop and phone with you at all times during the blowout and you will instantly have a remote office courtesy of Celadon Spa. You can also do this when getting hair colored, but definitely not when getting a haircut. *Note: Celadon Spa has speedy guest WiFi!
  • A good blowout will last for several days. Actually a few days into a good blowout your hair will likely have even more body and look even better. Additionally with products like dry shampoo available there are few reasons you need to touch your hair sooner than a couple of days after the blowout. Think how much time this will save you getting ready in the mornings and at night before events.  Your time is of great value!

Note: I use the Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo product that is sold at Celadon Spa. You can see Jeremy Paul spraying it into my hair during my blowout.

  • In the words of Deion Sanders, a very successful man who doesn’t have any hair, “If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good. If you play good, they pay good.” A great blowout will make you feel good and perform better at the many tasks you have in front of you because of your confidence. This makes a salon blowout a great investment because the benefits are far greater than the cost.

Celadon Spa has been my spot for over a decade in DC. I frequent this location for many spa services. In addition to being conveniently located, the entire team of spa professionals there are some of the most talented I have ever come across and also the kindest. I used to be promiscuous when it came to my salon habits in DC, but I kept coming back to Celadon Spa and now this is my one stop spot. I highly recommend you try out Celadon Spa!
